With a 2010 budget of $126 million, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which isn’t affiliated with any local humane societies or animal shelters, contributed less than one percent of its budget to local organizations. States like Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, Arkansas, North Dakota, Wyoming and Alaska received no support from the national organization. Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Virginia received about two percent from the national organization while Ohio, Missouri and Florida received around three percent. The largest recipient of HSUS funding was Louisiana, which received about six percent, or roughly $45,000. According to tax 2010 tax returns, HSUS shared two-fifths of one percent of its total budget to local affiliates. At one time, the HSUS use to have a 60-40 money sharing arrangement with pet shelters in at least five states. Today, the HSUS keeps more than 99% of all the money it raises. Check out HSUS website for more information on the organizations funds and contributions.
